Meta's Muse Hit 10 Million Downloads in 40 Days. Here's What It Bought.

Meta's Muse is one of the fastest-growing apps ever tracked. It's also one of the most heavily promoted. Both things are true, and the gap between them is the most useful marketing lesson of the fall.

What happened

Meta launched Muse on September 8, initially in the U.S., as a personal AI agent. Meta says it can send emails, book travel, fill out forms and make purchases on a user's behalf.

According to Sensor Tower data reported by TechCrunch, Muse reached 10.9 million installs within 40 days, 10.2 million of them in the U.S. Sensor Tower says only 11 other apps have hit that milestone so quickly since it started tracking in 2015. The most recent was Meta's own Threads, in July 2023. Muse's daily active users reached 2.5 million on October 16. On its third-quarter earnings call, Meta said Muse has passed 10 million users, with shopping and personal productivity as the main uses.

The retention story

Downloads can be bought. Retention can't, at least not for long. Here Muse genuinely stands out. Sensor Tower found it kept 30% of U.S. users after seven days and 23% after 14 days. ChatGPT, Claude and Grok averaged 19% and 16% over the same windows.

The spending story

Now the other side. Muse accounted for 39% of Meta's overall ad budget in October, up from 23% the month before, and climbed to 21st among U.S. brands by ad impressions, up from 73rd. Meta is also promoting it inside Facebook and Instagram, where its apps reach 3.6 billion daily users. Early Apptopia data found 95% of Muse adopters were also Facebook users.

So is Muse a breakout or a bought placement? Mostly both. Meta used its distribution to guarantee people would try it, and the retention numbers suggest enough of them found it useful to stay. That's the playbook in one sentence: paid and owned distribution buys the first session, and the product has to earn the second.

What's uncertain

App intelligence firms estimate, they don't count, and they often disagree. In September, TechCrunch noted Apptopia's download estimate for Muse ran higher than Sensor Tower's at the same point. Treat every figure here as directional.

The privacy question is also wide open. A free agent that reads your email and makes purchases creates a deep data relationship. NPR's Planet Money explored exactly that on October 27, asking what using Muse really costs.

What marketers and founders should take from it

  1. Separate the launch metric from the business metric. Downloads measure your media budget. Day-7 and day-14 retention measure your product.
  2. Distribution is a moat only if you own it. Meta's advantage is its own apps. For a founder, that's an email list, a community or a content channel you control.
  3. Get ready for agent shoppers. If AI agents are buying on people's behalf, your product pages, pricing and checkout need to work for software as well as humans. Clear specs, clean structured data and simple checkout flows become a sales channel.
  4. Know what your "free" costs the customer. Trust is a retention feature. Be explicit about what data you use and why.
